The Great Bengal Election 2021 - Star Team Of BJP And TMC

For the West Bengal assembly election, both Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress have roped in Tollywood celebrities. Here is a list of star candidates from Bengal who have forayed into politics.

Mithun Chakraborty

While the whole nation was buzzing with the idea that Dada, Sourav Ganguly will become the face of BJP in the assembly election 2021. BJP roped in the other Dada or famously Known in Bengal as Mithun Da. Seventy years old Mithun is not new to politics. Before starting his film career, he was linked with the Naxalite movement. TMC nominated him for the upper house of Parliament in 2014. Mithun attended the Parliament for only three days during his stint. He resigned in 2016 after his name appeared in the Saradha scam.





Mithun has given many blockbusters in his long film career. Mithun has a massive fan base in rural Bengal. He is the only Bengali actor who received the tag of the star in Bollywood. His two blockbuster political drama movies MLA Fatakeshto and its sequel Minister Fatakeshto remain famous among audiences for their dialogues. One of them being Marbo ekhane, lash porbe sashane (I will hit you here, and the body will be there at the cremation ground). Only time will tell, How the inclusion of this successful son of soil would help the party in Bengal.



Yash Dasgupta

The heartthrob of Tollywood was the first famous star to Join BJP. He became a household name in Bengal with the famous Star Jalsha Bengali serial Bojhena Se Bojhena. His Debut movie Gangster was a blockbuster. The actor has also worked in many Hindi serials and has a huge fan base among youngsters. BJP has announced him as the candidate from Chanditala in Hooghly district.






Srabanti Chatterjee

Srabanti started her career as a child artist. She went on to become the top actress of Tollywood. Srabanti has a huge fan following in rural Bengal. On a personal front, Srabanti got married at a very young age of 16. She has been through three failed marriages. The 33 years old actress is a doting mother of a teenaged son named Abhimanyu Chatterjee.



Babul Supriyo

Renowned playback singer Babul Supriyo joined politics in 2014.  The two-term MP from the Asansol constituency is also the Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. He will contest from Tollygunge, the center of the Bengali film industry. 



Payel Sarkar

For 90's kids, who have grown up watching Anurag Basu's serial Love Story, they surely remember the character of sweet college girl Shruti, played by Payel Sarkar. The actress got fame and recognition from this show. She has worked in many Hindi serials and Bengali movies. 
Payel is contesting the Behala East seat in Kolkata.






Tanushree Chakraborty

Bengali film actress Tanushree is known for her impeccable acting skills. While joining BJP, she said that she believed in the ideology of the party. The actress is the celebrity candidate of BJP from Shyampur in Howrah district




Anjana Basu

Anjana Basu, the renowned Bengali serial and movie actress, joined BJP in 2019. The party has fielded her from Sonarpur South in South 24 Parganas district. Here she will face the TMC candidate, serial actress Lovely Moitra. 


Parno Mitra

Parno started her career on Television and came into the limelight with her performance in the national award-winning Bengali film Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona. She joined BJP in 2019.






Rimjhim Mitra

Rimjhim Mitra is a prominent face in Bengali television. She has worked in popular Bengali serials Krishnakoli, Joy Baba Loknath, Titli, and many more.



Ashok Dinda

Former Indian Cricketer Joined BJP just before the 2021 Assembly election. BJP has fielded him from his birthplace, Moyna, in Purba Medinipur. The fast-medium bowler has played in the IPL from Kolkata, Pune, Delhi, and Bengaluru teams. In domestic cricket, he has played for team Bengal from 2005 to 2019.


Hiran Chatterjee

Hiran Chatterjee is part of the Bengali film industry since 2007 and has appeared in many commercial Bengali films. Before joining BJP, Hiran was the general secretary of the Trinamool Youth Congress or Yuva. BJP has fielded the actor from the Kharagpur Sadar seat for the upcoming polls.



Rudranil Ghosh

The famous Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh used to be a CPI(M) supporter during the Left era. Later he became close to Mamata Bannerjee and used to be the star campaigner of TMC. In 2021, just before the election, he switched to BJP.


Rishi Kaushik 

Rishi Kaushik is one of the most popular actors in Bengali Television. He has worked in mega serials Ekhane Akash Neel, Ishti Kutum, Kusum Dola, and Kora Pakhi.


Koushik Roy

Koushik Roy is another famous name in the Bengali Telly industry. He has worked in the serials Bojhena Se Bojhena, Kusum Dola, Fagun Bou. His current project Khorkuto is quite popular among audiences.


Locket Chatterjee

Locket Chatterjee joined BJP in 2015. She was one of the first Bengali celebrities to become part of the party. Locket won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Hoogly Lok Sabha seat. The General Secretary of BJP Bengal is contesting from Chinsurah in Hooghly district.


Rupa Ganguly

Rupa Ganguly got public recognition with her portrayal of the character Draupadi in B.R. Chopra's Mahabaharat(1988). The national award-winning actress joined BJP in 2015. She lost the 2016 Bengal assembly election and later inducted into the upper house of Parliament.



Bonny Sengupta


The latest to join the BJP bandwagon is Bengali actor Bonny Sengupta. Bonny has worked in hit movies Borbaad and Parbona Ami Chartey Toke. His girlfriend Koushani Mukherjee and mother Piya Sengupta have joined TMC. 


Apart from the above list, prominent Bengali actors Soumili Ghosh Biswas, Rahul Chakraborty, Raj Mukherjee, Ashok Bhadra, Meenakshi Ghosh, Mallika Banerjee, Papiya Adhikari, Emila Bhattacharjee, Debashree Bhattacharya, Kanchana Moitra, Rupanjana Mitra, and Biswajit Ganguly, Moumita Gupta, Rupa Bhattacharya, and Arindam Haldar have joined BJP.

Saayoni Ghosh

The Bengali actress gained public attention after being mired in controversy for her tweet insulting the Hindu Lord Shiva. In January 2021, an FIR was lodged against her. Mamata Banerjee supported her, and she joined her party. TMC has announced her as the candidate from the Asansol South constituency.

Sayantika 

The popular Bengali actress is known for her dancing skills. Within 48 hours of entry into TMC, she received the MLA ticket from Bankura.



Dev 

The leading Bengali actor turned producer joined TMC in 2014. He won the Ghatal LokSabha constituency twice.


Mimi Chakraborty

The leading Bengali actress forayed into politics in 2019. She contested from the Jadavpur Constituency in the 2019 general election as a Trinamool Congress candidate and registered a landslide victory. She regularly attends the rallies beside Mamata Banerjee.


Nusrat Jahan

The glamorous Bengali actress Nusrat Jahan joined active politics in 2019 and contested the Basirhat constituency as a Trinamool Congress candidate. She got around 7.8 Lakhs votes and emerged as the winner by a margin of 3.5L votes.



Koushani Mukherjee

28 years old Koushani Mukherjee won Miss Beauty of Kolkata in 2015 and debuted in Bengali cinema the same year. The actress has received the TMC ticket from Krishnanagar Uttar.

She has done very few films but has a tremendous social media presence. She has 1.7 million followers on Instagram and quite popular among youngsters.


Manoj Tiwary

Cricketer Manoj Tiwary has represented Bengal in domestic cricket and played in IPL for different teams. He joined TMC in February 2019. He is the candidate in the Shibpur constituency from TMC.



Raj Chakraborty

 Raj Chakraborty is the top commercial director of Bengali cinema. He is married to a leading Bengali actress Subhashree Ganguly. He is contesting the Barrackpore seat in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections.







Kanchan Mullick

The Bengali actor is known for his comic timings. TMC has fielded the actor from Hooghly's Uttarpara seat.



June Malia

50 years old, beautiful Bengali actress June Malia has worked on a range of movies and serials. TMC has fielded the actor from the Midnapore Sadar seat.



Soham Chakraborty

The talented Bengali actor Soham Chakraborty has appeared in more than 100 films. He joined TMC in 2014 and serving as the vice-president of the young Trinamool. He lost the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election from Borjora Constituency by a narrow margin. In 2021, he is contesting from the Chandipur.




Lovely Maitra 

The Bengali serial actress is popular among the masses for working in serials Jol Nupur and Mohor. She will take on rivals from Sonarpur Dakshin. Consequently, Election Commission removed her IPS husband from election duties. As per the law, family members of a candidate are not allowed in the election process.



Aditi Munshi

Kirtan singer Aditi Munshi came under the spotlight in 2015 with her sensational performances in the musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. The devotional vocal artist is contesting from Rajarhat Gopalpur seat of North 24 Pgs district.



Satabdi Roy 

The actress ruled the Bengali cinema during the late 1980s and 1990s. She is a three-time MP from the Birbhum constituency of West Bengal. The state vice president of TMC, Satabdi Roy, first won the election in 2009.


The other prominent actors who have joined TMC are Dipankar Dey, Piya Das, Bharat Kaul, Sritama Bhattacharjee, Ranieeta Das, Manali Dey, and Saurav Das.
